Our hair can play such a large role in our overall style, identity and personality. No, our hair does not define who we are. But it’s okay to admit that many of us feel just that little bit more confident when we know it’s a good hair day. So, if you’re looking for new hairstyles to try or you’re simply bored of the same styles you wear on repeat, here are six tutorials you can easily try for yourself at home, with very little styling experience or expertise required.
How to Cover the Hair Tie in Your Ponytail
The everyday ponytail is a go-to hairstyle for many, especially when short on time or when you simply don’t know what to do with your hair. But with one quick and easy hair hack, you can instantly transform your boring ponytail into an elevated hairstyle suitable for any occasion. In this tutorial, we show you how you can cover your ponytail using your own hair without needing any pins! All you need is one extra hair tie. Here’s how to do this hairstyle.

- Tie your hair into a ponytail, at any height, as you normally would.
- Grab a second hair tie and tuck it underneath the hair tie of your ponytail. The second hair tie should be sitting tall and vertically at the top of the base of your ponytail, visually creating two loops divided and secured in place by your first hair tie.
- Take a small piece of hair from your ponytail, wrap that piece around the hair tie that is holding the ponytail in place, until you cover the hair tie completely and reach the ends of your hair.
- Once you’ve almost reached the end of that wrapped piece of hair (or at least wrapped the hair a couple of times around) feed your hair through the top loop of your second hair tie. You will need to make sure your ends are long enough to be fed through the loop.
- Using one hand to hold the base of your ponytail where the hair has been wrapped around, use your other hand to pull down on the bottom loop of the second hair tie. This will guide the hair that is held in the top loop through and underneath the first hair tie used to create your ponytail. Don’t be afraid to give it a firm pull in a downwards motion.
- Once the second hair tie has been pulled out entirely, the end of the piece of hair wrapped around your ponytail will be pulled through and hidden in the rest of your hair (in the body of your ponytail).
The firmness, size and thickness of your hair ties may influence the execution of this hair hack. For example, thicker, firmer hair ties may make it more difficult to pull the second hair tie down and through your first hair tie in the ponytail. When you attempt the style for yourself, you will quickly discover the best type of hair ties for your hair type and thickness. Watch the full tutorial here for an easy-to-follow visual demonstration. Once you master this hair hack, you will never want to do a normal ponytail again without covering your hair tie just like this. Once again, it requires no bobby pins that would otherwise stick out of the style and visually ruin the elegance of the final result.
Quick Messy Bun

This quick messy bun hairstyle will soon become one of your new go-to styles as it only requires one hair tie and is extremely simple to execute once you’ve mastered the steps. It’s an effortless up do that you can wear for a special occasion or even when you just need to throw your hair up, get it out of your face and still look put together before hair wash day arrives. Watch the tutorial to see exactly how to do this hairstyle or follow these steps:
- Gather your hair as if you were creating a ponytail. The height and location of this hairstyle can be flexible to suit the look you prefer, as well as your hair length, type and thickness.
- Take a stretchy hair tie and place it over your gathered hair, just like the start of a ponytail.
- Twist the hair tie as if you were going to pull your ends through it again to create a firm ponytail. However, instead of doing this motion, lean forward and toss the ends of your hair over top of the hair tie, towards your face.
- From the hand that is holding your hair tie, place one finger under the weight of your hair that is tossed forward, leaving your hand in this place. Then using your opposite hand, pull your hair tie up and over to the other side, slowing removing your finger from underneath your hair, as you should now have the shape of the bun starting to form.
- Twist your hair tie again, but before securing it over your bun, toss the remaining hair from the front to the back, so your ends fold and sit back over top of the small bun you created first. Once all your ends are back over the bun, pull your hair tie for the final time over the entire bun which will ultimately secure the hairstyle.
- Depending on your hair length, you will almost certainly have a small amount of hair coming out of the bottom of the bun. However, you can simply twist and tuck these ends back into the same hair tie holding the bun together, leave them out or as you gently move the bun around to create the perfect shape, your ends may be slightly pulled through, making them shorter and less visible in the hairstyle.
- Gently work and adjust the hair with your fingers to create a beautiful bun shape and achieve your desired result.
This hairstyle can take a couple of attempts and a little bit of practice to master. But you may also create the perfect up do on your first attempt with this style. So, be persistent, practice and you’ll see just how easy this bun really is for creating an elegant up do. Depending on your hair type and texture, this hairstyle can be worn as a smooth, neat bun or an effortlessly messy bun.
Ponytail with NO hair tie
If you’re ever caught without a hair tie or claw clip and you need to pull your hair back, you have to try this hack that allows you to create a ponytail with no hair tie or elastic. It simply uses your own hair to create and secure the ponytail. There aren’t very many steps involved, so here’s what you need to do, or you can watch the tutorial for a visual demonstration:

- Gather your hair in your hands as if you were going to tie a ponytail.
- While one hand is holding your hair, use your other hand, specifically your thumb and index finger, to create a small part off to one side of your hair. This doesn’t need to be large or use a lot of hair, but you need to create an opening in your own hair. Don’t forget to keep holding onto your ends tight against your head.
- With your thumb and index finger resting in the opening of your hair, carefully feed the body of your hair through the part and twist it until all of your ends are pulled through entirely.
- That is it! You will be left with a twisted ponytail that requires no hair tie.
This hair hack can produce slightly unique results depending on hair type, texture and thickness. Ultra soft, thin or fine hair types might find the ponytail doesn’t stay in place for a long period of time. But this hack can still be used to, at the very least, softly gather your hair to one side or pull it back and out of the way.
Bun Hairstyle Hack

Donut buns have been used for many years, but this hairstyle hack is a modern variation on the traditional donut bun. It creates a beautiful low bun up do, but can be used for low, mid or high up dos. You will need one hair tie and a few bobby pins to create this look. It really is a must-try hairstyle as it can make even thin and fine hair types look thick and voluminous. Watch our hair tutorial here or follow these simple steps:
- Tie your hair into a low ponytail.
- Take one small section of hair from the top of your ponytail, then using your index fingers and thumbs, hold the end of that piece of hair up or out away from your head, then slowly roll your hair down and back towards the base of your ponytail. It is important to roll each piece of hair inwards towards your head, instead of out and away from your scalp.
- Once that first piece of hair has been rolled all the way down to your hair tie holding the ponytail together, you should be left with a roll of hair that you then need to secure to your head using bobby pins. This roll of hair doesn’t need to be perfectly neat and don’t stress if a few loose or small ends aren’t firmly secured yet. In fact, you will achieve a better result if each section of hair isn’t completely perfect.
- Grab another section of hair next to the first roll you’ve just created and repeat these same steps. Repeat the steps until you have rolled and pinned all the hair in your ponytail, creating your bun.
- After creating and securing the bun, gently adjust and move each section of hair until the individual rolls are blended cohesively together and you are happy with the overall shape and look of the bun. Don’t be afraid to add any extra bobby pins you might need to keep the bun secured and to tidy up any loose ends.
It is the rolling motion of your ends that creates a big, beautiful bun, similar to the shape of a donut bun, and can give the perception that you have long, thick hair. Once again, this bun doesn’t need to be perfect, as it will look elegant, modern and effortlessly messy with smooth or textured hair and minor imperfections.
Quick & Easy Low Bun Hairstyle
Another quick, easy and super simple yet stunning hairstyle hack is this low bun hairstyle. It’s the perfect go to style to replace a boring ponytail when your hair is due for a wash or if you just need it up and out of the way. All you will need is one hair tie. Watch the full tutorial here and follow these steps:

- Gather and tie your hair into a low ponytail, but before pulling your ends all the way through your hair tie for the final time, pull your ends only halfway to create a looped bun.
- Take the remaining ends of your hair that are coming from the bottom of your hair tie underneath your bun, and gently wrap the ends around the base of your bun to cover your hair tie.
- Then, tuck the ends of your hair back into your hair tie underneath the bun to secure the wrapped hair in place.
- Depending on your hair type, texture and length, this bun hairstyle can be as messy or as neat as you like. If you have too many layers sticking out of the bun, gently tuck and hide them back into the style using bobby pins. Otherwise, gently adjust and fan out your bun and let the style sit naturally on its own.
The best thing about this hairstyle and every style we share is that you can adjust it to suit your personal identify and style preferences. For a sleek, neat finish, simply use some pins and a small amount of hairspray to keep everything in place. Alternatively, embrace the imperfections of the style and enjoy the effortlessly messy look.
Claw Clip Up Do

There is an endless number of beautiful hairstyles that can be created with your favourite claw clips. So, if you love a good claw clip and want to switch up your hairstyle from a traditional claw clip twist, then it’s time to give this hair tutorial a try! Here is the video tutorial and the step-by-step process:
- Start by tying your hair into a ponytail. This style will suit mid or high ponytails best.
- Carefully and gently loosen your hair tie away from your head and create a part in your hair between your scalp and the hair tie of your ponytail.
- Hold the hair tie and feed it down then up through the part you’ve created in your hair. Don’t pull your ends entirely through the parted hair.
- As you are carefully pulling your ponytail through the part, slowly twist the looped hair that starts to form and hold it firm against your head to keep it in place.
- Grab your favourite claw clip and secure it over top of where the hair tie of your original ponytail is now sitting, in the middle of your head. The size of claw clip that will work best for you will depend on your hair type and thickness. Thinner, finer hair types might find it easier to use a slightly smaller claw clip, while long, thick hair will need a larger, full-size clip.
- Very gently tug your hair to adjust the size and shape of the loose, messy bun that sits on top of the claw clip until you create your desired look.
Doing the ponytail at the start of the hairstyle helps to create a firm up do that feels secure when wearing it, so there’s no fear of the clip falling out of the twist which can so often happen with many claw clip hairstyles.
